Details
In this new series of paintings, local artist Joe Maurer uses bumble bees as a repeating theme. The show’s name stems from the way bumble bees seem to defy the laws of physics. (Given the large size of their bodies and their relatively small wings, when compared to manmade aircraft, they shouldn’t be able to fly.)
Working with oils, photographs, and personal collages, Maurer creates abstract paintings of nature scenes, most often inspired by locations few people know about or see. The show features many early season blooming flowers native to Wisconsin. Within these landscape paintings are remnant prairies, native species, rural areas, and familiar scenes around the city.
Maurer has a BFA in Art from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design and a Masters in Landscape Architecture from the University of Pennsylvania. He draws from a deep commitment to ecology and love of place. He is a self-employed independent painter, filmmaker, and public artist. His work has been recognized with over 20 state and regional grants and awards.
