After Hurricane Katrina upended her life, journalist Trish O’Kane found healing in an unexpected place: the birds of Warner Park. When their habitat was threatened by development, she and her neighbors rallied to protect it—forming a powerful community of nature lovers along the way. O’Kane will reflect on birds, resilience, and the power of paying attention to the natural world in a conversation.
The conversation will be moderated by Alisha Craig-King, the Executive Director of Wisconsin Society for Ornithology and author of Orvis Beginners Guide to Birdwatching.
About the book: Trish O’Kane, the author of Birding to Change the World: A Memoir, is a writer and a senior lecturer in environmental justice at the University of Vermont, where avians are her teaching assistants. A former human rights journalist in Central America and the Deep South, she has written for the New York Times, Time, and the San Francisco Chronicle.
